Rebecca McNutt's Review

Klibby's depiction of Shadowtail

'Fans of Watership DownLord of the Flies and The Secret of NIMH will be thrilled to discover this book, which explores a colony of squirrels in a way like no other, mixing elements of fantasy with the complex behaviours of animals and also the problems that arise from selfishness and brutality. This is a deeply creative book, but more than that it's also a book that shows the importance of trust and self-reliance.

When a mysterious but enticing new "friend" comes along promising great things, this group of red squirrels can't wait to join in, but soon they learn that they've put their trust in the wrong hands. It'll take courage, friendship and craftiness to find a way out. In this strange animal dictatorship exists some very dark corruption and hidden problems, raising some interesting questions about unquestioned conformity.

A book like this is one that could easily appeal to a wide audience, and the writing style evokes plenty of emotion and suspense in regards to our story's heroes. Even if you're not a big reader of animal stories, this is a book I'd really recommend.'

Did everyone spot the pun with regard a story about squirrels being reviewed by a McNutt?
